The modern medicine community has known for years about the terrible symptoms that women approaching menopause can suffer with. These symptoms are usually caused by the progressive decrease of the estrogens, progesterone, and testosterone as age progresses. Unfortunately, back then the accepted symptoms were hot flashes, dry mucus membranes, and decreased libido.

Today practitioners in integrated, functional, and anti-aging medicine know that the effects of low estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone go far beyond hot flashes, dry membranes, and reduced libido.

For example, we now know that low estrogen can also cause cardiovascular issues, bone loss, memory loss, and other serious issues. Low progesterone can cause depression, anxiety, poor sleep, an increased risk of fibroids, cysts, endometriosis, and other issues. Low testosterone can cause the loss of lean muscle with the result being poor muscle/fat ratio, decreased strength and stamina, etc.

Back in 1941 the drug company Wyeth Ayerst introduced the first estrogen replacement drug, called Premarin, to treat the symptoms of hot flashes. Premarin is made from the urine of pregnant horses (mares) thus the name pregnant mare urine. Of course the estrogen of horses is not the same as that made naturally by the human body.

The first progesterone replacement drug was introduced in 1939. This group of medications are called "progestins" because they are synthetic and are not identical to the natural progesterone made by the body. The most popular progestin is called Provera.

The two medications Premarin and Provera became best sellers to treat the symptoms of menopause and in fact have been among the most prescribed drugs in the United States. Unfortunately, these two medications also came with some serious risks that included an increased risk for cancer.
